The second album from Milwaukee-based composer Releaux, Phage is the brooding, electronic, impressionist soundscape of a biotech war waged on microscopic battlegrounds. This soundtrack for the award-winning indie techno-thriller, “Soul Undertow,” features dark and psychedelic ambient, industrial techno, and gothic dream pop textures.
The album makes liberal use of luxurious, evolving, melodic ambient washes mixed with pulsating electronic rhythms, immense bedrock drones, and gentle, but insistent backbeats. The bombastic title track evokes sci-fi action sequences, while the closing track, “Antigen,” hearkens back to big 80s post-punk and ethereal wave love themes.
Phage rewards close, critical listening with subtle detail and variation worth repeated plays, but also serves perfectly as a background aid to focus work.
